Kits and ToolsIt is essential that you have your own instrument connecting leads and hand tools. Kits containing adequate connecting leads are on sale in the campus shop. The recommended set of handtools is as follows: 1. A precision wire cutters with a cutting head approximately 15 mm long 2. A precision pliers with tapered jaws 40-50 mm long. 3. A wire stripper suitable for wire down to 0.5 mm diameter. 4. A selection of small Phillips (i.e. crosshead) and flat-blade screwdrivers. 5. A 25W soldering iron, complete with stand. Arrangements can be made through the Technicians in the School of Electronic Engineering for the purchase of all tools at wholesale prices. All tools and kits will be invaluable in later years as well. Electronic engineering students must acquire the skills involved in building and testing electronic circuits. As an introduction to these skills all first year students must complete a construct-and-test project during semester 2. The set of components for this project will be on sale at that time in the campus shop at £15. The soldering iron mentioned above will also be required for this project.
